Training on
Academic or Scientific Writing
Assalamu Alaikum Wa-Rahmatullahhi Wa-Barakatuhu.
Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute, Dhaka is going to conduct an 1-day training course on “Academic or Scientific Writing” under the supervision of Dr. Md. Nurul Amin, Associate Prof. Research & Development, Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital & Research Institute, Dhaka. He is a Public Health Expert and a former Teacher of Community Medicine at Rajshahi Medical College. He was one of the National Trainers of “Training on Research Methods” for Postgraduate Medical Students, conducted by Directorate General of Health Services, Dhaka Bangladesh. He has long 30 years of experience in “Clinical and Public Health Research”. He has provided consultancy services to > 600 postgraduate medical students to solve their research related problems/issues pertaining to thesis/dissertation. He was awarded WHO Fellowship in 1999 for securing Masters in Public Health from Mahidol University, Thailand. He had been the coordinator of MIS, National Nutrition Project (one of the largest projects in Health Sector) for long 10 years, where his main responsibility was to analyze the data generated from the field level nutrition-related activities and prepare “Monitoring & Evaluation Report” from them. He was one of the 3 Mission Members of World Bank (WB) Mission in Bangladesh for National Nutrition Project Progress Survey.
The course "Academic or Scientific Writing" is of 4 hours duration to be completed by 4 classes in a single day. The course is subdivided into 4 Parts, each part will be covered by 1 class of 1 hour duration each.
The contents of the training are:
1) How to write introduction section
2) Research problem & Researchable problem, generating research question & hypothesis
3) Research objective and relationship among Research title, Research question, Research hypothesis & objective, variables and operational definition of variables with practice exercises
4) Study Design to Data analysis plan and deciding appropriate statistics to test the hypothesis or answer the research question.
This short-orientation course has been particularly designed to meet the need of the Clinical, Paraclinical and Public Health teachers who are examiners or potential examiners of postgraduate students of clinical, paraclinical, preventive and medico-social discipline. However, any researchers aspiring to undertake a research work in any field of biological sciences will be equally benefited.
The classes have been designed in such a way that every trainee will be equipped enough to write their study protocol more or less confidently. The course will highlight the need of the funding agency, such as, clinical or social implications of the proposed research and addressing ethical issues, which the protocol submitter/applicant generally encounter.
Learning objectives:
At the end of the workshop the students/participants will be able to:
- write journal article for publication in a reputed journal
- develop study protocol of acceptable standard
- evaluate thesis/dissertation or protocol submitted by their students
- state clearly the rationale for the study, research question/hypothesis
- describe the objectives in measurable and attainable terms
- select the right design to address the hypothesis and objectives
- define and refine the study population employing the enrollment/eligibility criteria
- choose the variables that will reflect the research question/hypothesis and objectives
- operationalize their variables as and when needed
10. develop the research instrument (questionnaire / check-list / data-sheet / data collection format)
